Overview

Summer Staff - Organized Camp

Position Objective:

Oversee and lead all water-based activities at Ponderosa Lodge (including but not limited to pools, pool/water games, surfing and kayaking) and the staff who lead them. Ensure that campers have a pool or water based experience that lines up with the Mount Hermon Youth Ministry vision and objectives. Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers and staff involved in all water based activities, in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.

 

Key Job Accountabilities:

 

  • Train and monitor staff for adherence to Mount Hermon’s Aquatics risk management practices and procedures.
  • Care and maintenance of all pool equipment and sanitation levels. Ensure daily, weekly and periodic checks are performed and logged. Timely reports of damage or maintenance issues are reported to the Activities Lead and Pool Technician.
  • Lead, supervise and train lifeguard part-time and substitute lifeguards.
  • Communicate weekly schedule of aquatics events with the Mount Hermon Aquatics Lead.
  • Oversee the surf and kayak experience making sure that the Mount Hermon Recreation and Adventure staff understand and carry out Ponderosa’s program schedule and vision.
  • Meet regularly with the Ponderosa Lodge Activities Team.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Activities Lead.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Ponderosa Lodge Lifeguards.

Qualifications

General Qualifications:

A mature follower of Jesus, still growing and developing in their faith.  Fully in accord with Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision, values and statement of beliefs. Committed to living these out personally, and instilling them in the organization. Of strong moral character and integrity. 

Education/Certifications/Licenses: 

  • College graduate preferred.
  • Current First Aid, CPR Pro, AED, O2 and Lifeguard Certifications.

Work Experience:

  • Prior lifeguard experience is necessary.
  • Experience teaching youth and young adults new skills and managing risk in an aquatics setting.
  • Experience with watercraft, particularly kayaks in the ocean, surfing, and ocean guarding are extremely beneficial. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
  • Ability to demonstrate a personal committed and thought-through faith in Christ.
  • Possess proven leadership experience and skills along with a strong background in ministry and leadership of high school/junior high campers and staff.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • The employee is frequently required to run, swim, stand, sit for long periods and use steep trails and stairs.
  • The employee is frequently required climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl.
  • The physical environment requires the employee to talk and hear both in person from close and long distances and by phone or radio.
  • The employee may be required to lift, push or pull persons or equipment over 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Additional Requirements/Skills:

  • Work hours vary with program. Water Specialist will observe kayak and surf activities, providing feedback and coaching to the instructors and guards.
  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermon’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
