Overview

Summer Staff - Organized Camp

Position Objective:

The Counselor Lead will be responsible to effectively train and supervise Ponderosa Counselors. Counselor Leads are devoted to coaching, developing, and mentoring the Ponderosa Lodge counseling staff. The Counselor Lead is responsible to model a genuine lifestyle of Christian discipleship, nurturing spiritual growth of campers and staff through the facilitation of program activities and curriculum in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.

 

Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Evaluate the counselors, regarding their job and advise with ways to improve themselves and their ministry to campers.
  • Facilitate counselor/camper relations. When needed, assist counselors in difficult times and decisions concerning campers, especially in regards to discipline.
  • Conduct mid-summer evaluations of all supervised staff.
  • Assist with the periodic training of staff and the oversight and planning of counselor meetings.
  • Meet weekly with the Ponderosa Lodge Leadership Team and supervisor.
  • Assist with Program and/or Activities and other duties as assigned by PL Coordinator. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Ponderosa Lodge Male Counselors.

Qualifications

General Qualifications:

A mature follower of Jesus, still growing and developing in their faith.  Fully in accord with Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision, values and statement of beliefs. Committed to living these out personally, and instilling them in the organization. Of strong moral character and integrity.

Education/Certifications/Licenses:

  • College graduate preferred
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience mentoring and discipling 18-25 year olds.
  • Experience in camping ministry, with service in various roles, such as counseling, program or operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
  • Ability to demonstrate a personal, committed and thought-through faith in Christ.
  • Possess proven leadership experience and skills along with a strong background in ministry and leadership of high school/junior high campers and college staff.
  • Attention to detail and follow-through with an ability to be creative, flexible and able to adjust to the challenges of the program.
  • Able to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.

 

Key Job Accountabilities

Physical Demands:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and hiking.

Additional Requirements/Skills:

  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermon’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
