Summer Staff - Organized Camp

Position Objective:


Kidder Counselor Wilderness River Guides are primarily responsible to model a genuine lifestyle of Christian discipleship, providing for campers’ safety and well-being while befriending and nurturing spiritual growth through program activities and curriculum on site and in the wilderness, leading/assisting with adventure and recreation activities. Will also act as guides in the backcountry and on the river as to ensure that campers have a camp experience in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.


Key Job Accountabilities:       

  • Live with and lead approx. 7-8 campers each week. Lead small group Bible studies.
  • Seek out and connect to campers guiding them spiritually through activities and curriculum.
  • Oversee and implement a variety of adventure, recreation, and guiding activities as assigned, with enthusiasm including 1-2 trips into the Wilderness throughout the summer.
  • Ensure camper safety at all times.
  • Attend all staff meetings and events.
  • Share in the responsibilities of keeping camp areas (including cabins, living areas, workspaces and supplies) clean and orderly.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the broader program, serving in both your primary and secondary roles with enthusiasm.
  • Actively engage and help build the summer staff community with your attitude, words, and actions.
  • Ensure smooth execution of the program specifically by being on time, prepared, and willing to assist with immediate and/or unforeseen needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisors.

  • None.


General Qualifications:


A mature follower of Jesus, still growing and developing in their faith.  Fully in accord with Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision, values and statement of beliefs.  Committed to living these out personally, and instilling them in the organization.  Of strong moral character and integrity.



  • At least 1 year college experience preferred.
  • Must be CPR/WFA certified; WAFA or WFR is preferred, prior to arrival at camp.
  • Take and pass the ropes course belayer training during Kidder Creek staff training.
  • Must have successfully completed Kidder Creek's River Guide School and Swiftwater Rescue (or equivalent course from another provider) prior to summer.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience working with elementary, junior high and high school students.
  • Prior camp counseling experience preferred.

  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
  • Ability to demonstrate a personal, committed and thought-through faith in Christ.

  • Possess creativity, willingness to learn and ability to teach and lead Bible studies.
  • Able to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.
  • Attention to detail and follow-through, creative and able to adjust to challenges of the program.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing job assignments and schedules with short notice.

Key Job Accountabilities

Physical Demands:

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Requires lifting and transporting 25-50 lbs. of gear and equipment up and down stairs.
  • Requires employee to ascend and/or descend ladders, stairs, cables, and trees using hands and feet.
  • The employee is frequently required to run, swim, stand, sit for long periods and use steep trails and stairs.
  • The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl.
  • The physical environment requires the employee to talk and hear both in person from close and long distances and by phone or radio.
  • The employee may be required to lift, push or pull persons or equipment over 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to be in the sun for extended periods of time.


Additional Requirements/Skills:


  • Will be required to work secondary assignments and rotation week assignments of adventure, recreation, transportation and/or housekeeping duties.
  • Assist in service needs (maintenance, food service, and housekeeping) at camp as assigned by the Kidder Creek leadership team.
  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermons Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provideproof of eligibility to work in the United States.
