Summer Staff - Organized Camp

Position Objective:


The Backcountry Lead is responsible to lead campers and staff in the Back Country ("BC") Programs to ensure that students have a fun, safe and missional adventure experience in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.


Key Job Accountabilities:        

  • Ensure the implementing of programs; meet goals and objectives of the program.  
  • Ensure Care and maintenance of all adventure equipment and areas, including daily and regular inspections and submitting timely reports of damage or broken equipment.
  • Transport campers to and from wilderness, adventure, river and camp activities.
  • Ensure the safety of all campers in wilderness, adventure and river activities while guiding.  
  • Ensure the implementation of the spiritual program with campers and relating activities and experiences to applicable Biblical truth.
  • Act as counselor for campers in BC programs.  
  • Attend all required staff meetings and events.
  • Share in the responsibilities of keeping camp areas and equipment clean.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the broader camp programs of KC.
  • Actively engage and help build the summer staff community with your attitude, words, and actions.
  • Ensure smooth execution of the program specifically by being on time, prepared, and willing to assist with immediate and/or unforeseen needs.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

General Qualifications:


A mature follower of Jesus, still growing and developing in their faith.  Fully in accord with Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision, values and statement of beliefs.  Committed to living these out personally, and instilling them in the organization.  Of strong moral character and integrity.



  • At least 3 years college experience preferred.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified prior to arrival at camp. WFR is required.
  • Current Valid Class C Driver’s License; able to drive campers.
  • Must have successfully completed Kidder Creek's River Guide School and Swiftwater Rescue (or equivalent course from another provider) prior to summer.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience working with elementary, junior high and high school students.
  • Previous Kidder Creek experience preferred.
  • Previous leadership or management experience.

  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
  • Ability to demonstrate a personal, committed and thought-through faith in Christ.
  • Positive role model, listener, enthusiastic leader, and friend.
  • Follow-through, creative, flexible and able to adjust to challenges of the program.
  • Able to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.
  • Backpacking experience required.
  • Rock Climbing experience required.
  • Prior camp counseling experience or similar ministry experience required.
  • River guiding or swiftwater experience preferred.

Key Job Accountabilities

Physical Demands:


The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, hiking long distances on varied terrain, swimming, climbing, shouting, ability to lift/carry anywhere from 15 to over 60 lbs., and engage in general physical play with children. Position also requires ability to hear, speak and see clearly in adverse conditions.


Additional Requirements/Skills:

  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermons Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provideproof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Current Valid Class C Driver’s License; ability to drive campers in accordance with Mount Hermon driver qualifications.
