Overview

Summer Staff - Organized Camp

Position Objective:

 

The Kidder Adventure Lead will lead the Adventure staff in the three R’s: Ropes, Rocks and Rivers.  He/she will lead the river program as a guide and manager, lead in Ropes Courses and Rock Climbing, host adventure groups at Kidder Creek (“KC”) and on river, and will also lead campers in recreation and adventure activities as assigned at the river and at camp, ensuring that campers have an adventure experience in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.

 

Key Job Accountabilities:

 

  • Supervise and manage adventure staff and implement river, rock and ropes programs as presented by KC leadership.
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of all river equipment, including daily and regular inspections and timely reports of damaged or broken equipment.
  • May be required to transport campers to and from wilderness, adventure, river and camp activities.
  • Communicate with federal agencies and manage required documentation for operation and gear.
  • Coordinate logistics to operate river days, including setting shuttle and assigning staff duties for boat and meal prep.
  • Coordinate ordering, packaging and delivery of Food Service on the River and at Outback.
  • Host Outback adventure and River groups and assist with KC programs when adventure activities are not operating.
  • Lead debriefs with campers and relate activities and experiences to applicable Biblical truth.
  • Empower, lead and train counselors in all adventure events.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the broader camp program both on and off KC and at the river and ensure smooth execution of the program specifically by being on time, prepared and willing to assist with immediate and/or unforeseen needs.
  • Actively engage and help build the summer staff community with your attitude, words, and actions.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and events.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Adventure Trip Leads.
  • Adventure Guides.
  • Rotating staff serving on the river.

Qualifications

General Qualifications:

 

A mature follower of Jesus, still growing and developing in their faith.  Fully in accord with Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision, values and statement of beliefs.  Committed to living these out personally, and instilling them in the organization.  Of strong moral character and integrity.

 

Education/Certifications/Licenses:

 

  • At least 3 years college experience preferred.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified prior to arriving at camp.  WFR, WFA or WAFA certification is preferred.
  • Must have successfully completed Kidder Creek's River Guide School and Swiftwater Rescue (or equivalent course from another provider) prior to summer.
  • Must take and pass ropes level 2 training during Kidder Creek staff training.
  • Must take and pass ropes level 2 training during Kidder Creek staff training.
  • Current valid Class C driver’s license.

 

Work Experience:

 

  • Prior experience working with elementary, junior high school students.
  • 3 Years’ experience river guiding on Class III-IV river required.
  • Experience with ropes courses and/or rock climbing preferred.
  • Prior camp counseling experience preferred.
  • Prior management or supervisory experience preferred.

Key Job Accountabilities

Physical Demands:

 

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in the heat/cold, wet/humid and dry/arid conditions.
  • Requires sitting, standing squatting, stooping, twisting and hiking long distances on varied terrain, swimming climbing and shouting.
  • Requires employees to ascend and/or descend ladders, stairs, cables and trees using hands and feet.
  • Requires lifting and transporting 15-60 lbs of gear and equipment up and down stairs and over uneven terrain.
  • Physical environment requires the employee to talk and hear from close and long distances in adverse conditions.
  • Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

 

Additional Requirements/Skills:

 

  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermon’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Willingness to drive campers in camp vehicles. Valid Class C driver's’ license and clean driving record for the past two years.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Share in the responsibilities of keeping camp areas including cabins, living areas, workspaces and supplies clean and orderly.  Assist in service needs (maintenance, foodservice, housekeeping) at camp as assigned by the Kidder Creek Leadership team.
